Obama & McCain On The Issues: Global Trade, Iraq, Iran Afghanistan, Financial Regulation

Global Trade

For all the fury that the North American Free Trade Agreement generated last winter, when Senator Barack Obama and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton one-upped each other in denouncing the deal and accused the other of being a closet supporter of it, trade has been less of an issue during the general election. That is not unusual: scholars say that trade hasn’t been a decisive factor in electing presidents for decades.

It is also not clear how big a gap there is between Senator Obama and Senator John McCain on Nafta, given the murky tale about a visit last year to Canada by Mr. Obama’s economic adviser, Austan D. Goolsbee, in which he was said to have reassured Canadian officials about his boss’s position. But trade is a byword for the forces of globalization, and in this broader debate, there are differences between the two. In 2005, Mr. Obama supported a bill that would have imposed a tariff on imports from China if the Chinese did not agree to revalue their currency; Mr. McCain opposed it.http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/issues/trade.html

Iraq and Afghanistan
Most foreign policy experts say that Senator John McCain has Senator Barack Obama on Iraq, and that Mr. Obama has Mr. McCain on Afghanistan and Pakistan. Mr. Obama’s insistence on withdrawing United States combat troops from Iraq on a fixed timeline, they say, could jeopardize gains made over the last 18 months. Still, many experts credit Mr. Obama’s argument that a fixed timeline for withdrawal would force Iraqi politicians to get their act together.

In Afghanistan, the difference between the candidates is largely rhetorical. Mr. McCain has chided Mr. Obama for suggesting that he would attack targets in Pakistan if American interests were at stake. The reality, policy experts say, is that the Bush administration, and a McCain administration, would do the same; they just wouldn’t announce it first.
http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/issues/iraq.html

Iran
During the campaign, as Iran has kept building centrifuges to produce nuclear fuel, both candidates have been less than specific about three big issues. The first is how to gain leverage against Iran: While each candidate has called for greater sanctions, neither has said how he would decide if it was time to invoke military options.

The second is what military action, if any, might work: Intelligence officials say they believe that Iran’s nuclear facilities are so well dispersed that an attack against the biggest sites might only set the nuclear program back by a few years. And neither candidate has addressed the most likely scenario: That Iran would acquire the fuel and technology for a bomb, but not build or test one. That would leave it just within the limits of the nuclear nonproliferation treaty, but poised to make a weapon on short notice. http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/issues/iran.html

Financial Regulation
Both candidates promise to streamline a financial regulatory system that splits enforcement powers among a half-dozen entities ranging from the Federal Reserve to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Senator Barack Obama’s comments suggest a more comprehensive overhaul, but neither senator has said which agencies might be closed or merged. Both would attempt to limit executives’ pay and tighten capital and liquidity standards for financial institutions.

Their difference on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, however, illustrates a contrast in the style they might employ in pursuit of the same general goal: While Senator John McCain would carve them up and privatize the parts, Senator Obama has emphasized that it is less important how the companies are reshaped than that the public purpose — assuring liquidity for banks to make new mortgages — is best preserved http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/issues/regulation.html

Obama & McCain On The Issues: Immigration, Housing, Climate Change, Russia

Housing
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored mortgage finance companies now being bailed out by the government, used their implicit guarantees of federal support to take risks that proved excessive and led to their collapse. But the vast bulk of subprime mortgages that fueled the underlying crisis were financed by their private sector rivals. Most experts agree that lax regulation was part of the problem.

The Federal Reserve, after years of refusing to clamp down on deceptive mortgages, admitted as much this year when it began drastically tightening its rules. Senator John McCain’s $300 billion proposal to buy up these mortgages and the administration’s bailout plan have both been criticized as too lenient toward irresponsible banks and Wall Street firms; proponents say that what matters is ending the crisis.
http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/issues/housing.html

Climate Change
It is hard to see how legislation that, by design, raises the cost of energy will take hold in Congress while the economy remains in turmoil. Some environmentalists are pushing for a focus on more research or actions a president can take without legislation.

On the international front, prospects are poor for significant progress. Globally, and particularly in China and India, economies are being fueled mainly by an ever-expanding use of coal. The next president will take office just 11 months before a deadline that the world’s nations have set for a new climate treaty, a situation that many experts say almost guarantees a weak result.
http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/issues/climate.html

Russia
Russia’s short, victorious war over Georgia in August is certain to affect American foreign policy for years to come; the dangers it highlighted were cited as a factor in Senator Barack Obama’s choice of a seasoned foreign affairs hand, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., as his running mate. But while Senator Obama and Senator John McCain both criticize President Bush for relying on a personal relationship with Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin, and both strenuously criticize Russia’s manhandling of Georgia, there is a stark difference between them. Mr. McCain’s arguments emphasize the view that Mr. Putin was never worthy of trust. For Mr. Obama, there is no escaping the need for Russian-Western cooperation on huge problems.

Election 08: I Do Not Want A Black Man Running My Country"

Thanks to our friends at Keystone Progressive, here is a recent McCain rally in Pottsville, Pennsylvania .

I honestly do not understand how people who are struggling to survive can so be upset at Obama running for president, when George Bush is the person who has done great harm to this country, but at least I know where these racists stand.

But what about the people who are increasingly hiring less and less minorities?

The Labor Department recently reported recently that the national unemployment rate is 6.1%, but for African Americans, the unemployment rate is 11.4%, (19.1 for teenagers). The rate of African-American men seeking but not finding work rose to 12.9% — the highest since 1994.

Philadelphia Tribune , News Reporter Terry Johnson noted that "Some economists argue that the national Black jobless rate or employment-population ratio (the proportion of the working age population with a job) for African Americans is 42 percent of all those of working age. The translation: Almost half of all African Americans who can work aren’t working."

So as scary and ignorant as some of these people are in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, but at least we know where they stand. I can't say the same thing about the various companies across the U.S.

Obama & McCain On The Issues: Education, Foreign Policy, Health Care, Energy, Science and Technology

Health Care
The candidates’ health positions reflect the wide gulf between Senator John McCain’s devotion to free markets and Senator Barack Obama’s embrace of a larger government role. But the campaign also has revealed common ground on priorities like reducing health spending by reconfiguring the Medicare payment.
Both candidates would have to achieve significant reductions in the growth of health spending to fill budget gaps left by their proposals. Whether they can, either econometrically or politically, is speculative at best, particularly in a battered economy. http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/issues/health.html

Energy
While the two candidates agree that the nation must wean itself from a $700-billion-a-year addiction to imported oil, they disagree on how to do it. Both hew fairly closely to party orthodoxy: Senator John McCain backs using the tax code to encourage oil drilling, while Senator Barack Obama would use the proceeds from a windfall profits tax on oil companies to finance alternatives and help the poor.

Although both acknowledge a need to encourage energy conservation and development of renewables, only Mr. Obama would use government mandates and tax incentives to achieve it; Mr. McCain calls such subsidies boondoggles.

Election 08 Shocker! Anchorage Daily News in Alaska Endorses Obama For President

She shoots moose. She's a hockey mom. She's Elizabeth Hasslebeck's (The View) new BFF.

Yet, even with those credentials for vice president, Governor Sarah Palin's newspaper in Alaska , the Anchorage Daily News endorsed Barak Obama for president.

This shocking turn of events is another hit on the McCain-Palin ticket, who has only received 69 newspaper endorsements compared to 170 for Obama-Biden.

Below is piece of the Anchorage Daily News endorsement:

"Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, brings far more promise to the office. In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand. The same cannot be said of Sen. McCain.

....Gov. Palin has shown the country why she has been so successful in her young political career. Passionate, charismatic and indefatigable, she draws huge crowds and sows excitement in her wake. She has made it clear she's a force to be reckoned with, and you can be sure politicians and political professionals across the country have taken note. Her future, in Alaska and on the national stage, seems certain to be played out in the limelight.

Yet despite her formidable gifts, few who have worked closely with the governor would argue she is truly ready to assume command of the most important, powerful nation on earth. To step in and juggle the demands of an economic meltdown, two deadly wars and a deteriorating climate crisis would stretch the governor beyond her range. Like picking Sen. McCain for president, putting her one 72-year-old heartbeat from the leadership of the free world is just too risky at this time".

Barry Michael Cooper Parallels Obama To Rap, McCain To Rock

Barry Michael Cooper, who was the screenwriter for Above The Rim and New Jack City, wrote a piece that involves Obama and Hip Hop on his Huffington Post blog.

"..Barack Obama is the greatest MC of all time. The DNC's Master of Ceremony's skills of Moving the Crowd have never been more evident than on the night of August 28th, 2008 in Denver's Invesco Stadium. It was the night Barack Obama fulfilled Martin Luther King's dream, and accepted the Democratic National Party's nomination for President. I wonder what went through his mind before he took the stage that night. Was it Jigga, as Obama mentally scrolled through his list of detractors in the media and politics, who tried to clown him by deifying him?: "I never claimed to have wings on/I get my/by any means on/when there's a drought/get your umbrellas out/that's when I brainstorm."

New York Times Endorses Barack Obama For President

"The United States is battered and drifting after eight years of President Bush’s failed leadership.

He is saddling his successor with two wars, a scarred global image and a government systematically stripped of its ability to protect and help its citizens — whether they are fleeing a hurricane’s floodwaters, searching for affordable health care or struggling to hold on to their homes, jobs, savings and pensions in the midst of a financial crisis that was foretold and preventable.

As tough as the times are, the selection of a new president is easy. After nearly two years of a grueling and ugly campaign, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois has proved that he is the right choice to be the 44th president of the United States."

Mentally Unstable Soldiers Redeployed to Iraq

(ABC News) More than 600,000 Americans have served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"Psychological trauma is cumulative," explained Dr. Paul Ragan, a former Navy psychiatrist who is an associate professor of psychiatry at Vanderbilt University. More deployments can mean more mental stress, and for some, more mental illnesses, he said.

Army surveys show that for those soldiers deployed once, the rate of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder is 12 percent. For those deployed three or more times, the rate is 27 percent.

"People who have psychiatric symptoms, actively symptomatic with PTSD or depression, are being sent back to the very situation that caused their PTSD and depression," Ragan said.

I am Joe Spartacus, The Tiger Woods of Plumbing

This whole "Joe The Plumber" thing is getting out of hand. In a desperate, but interesting move, John McCain's campaign asked people to upload videos for their "I am Joe"ad, its sort of feels like Nike's "I am Tiger Woods" commercial back in the day or better yet, Kirk Douglas' "I am Spartacus" scene.

"I am Joe" is smart from a viral video perspective and I'm sure these folks feel like they are doing a good thing, but don't they realize that John McCain is a wealthy dude who's using the old Republican trick of "my friends, even though I'm rich and my running mate has spent over $150,000 in clothes and makeup, we're really one of you" plan.

The ironic thing is that John McCain and Sarah Palin were in Ohio this week, but there was no sign of the real "Joe The Plumber."

Hmmm, wouldn't you think if John McCain and Sarah Palin were really fond of "Joe The Plumber," he would take him to his tour stops in Ohio and bring him on stage?

I guess Joe found some plumbing work OR maybe he's just being used as a political football to score some desperate votes with the other "Joes" in the U.S.

I guess we''ll find out how many "Joes" will actually vote for John McCain on November 4th.

Election 08: Rolling Stone-John McCain-Make-Believe Maverick

Last month, Rolling Stone Magazine had a great in-depth article on the life of Senator John Sidney McCain III. Here are few nuggets:

+ Allegedly a hard drinker and womanizer, McCain was so bad in military school that he finished 5th from the bottom of his class.
While most students would have been expelled for challenging their superiors, McCain was always safe due to the fact both his father and grandfather were admirals.

+ Like George W. Bush, John McCain allegedly has daddy issues. In his case, McCain was always had need to prove that he could be more successful than his father and grandfather.

+ Although he crashed three fighter planes during his military history, he was still allowed to fly a fighter plane in Vietnam, when in actually he was not qualified to do so.

+ Allegedly, all of the soldiers were given the choice to leave the P.O.W. camp in Vietnam early, but they all refused, not just McCain

+ in late 1970s McCain was really tight with Ronald and Nancy Reagan until he divorced his former beauty queen wife Carol (who was crippled in an auto accident in the late 1960s). A few weeks after the divorce, McCain married former USC cheerleader Cindy Hensley, (Cindy McCain is the daughter of a multimillionaire Anheuser-Busch distributor in Arizona and her worth is estimated around $100 million).

Shocked by the divorce, McCain's relationship with the Regans cooled and Nancy Reagan hired McCain's ex-wife to work for her in the White House.

+ McCain is now using the same Bush team that allegedly spread the word in South Carolina that he had a "black baby." In reality, Cindy adopted a young girl from Bangladesh.

The article is quite lengthy, but its pretty good. Check it out.

Election 08: More Newspapers That Backed Bush in 2004 Are Now For Obama

Obama speaking to nearly 100,000 St. Louis supporters on Saturday.

Recently, Utah’s Salt Lake Tribune newspaper endorsed Senator Barack Obama for president. Part of their reasoning of choosing Obama over John McCain is due to the Arizona senator’s choice of Sarah Palin as his V.P. :

“...More than any single factor, McCain's bad judgment in choosing the inarticulate, insular and ethically challenged Palin disqualifies him for the presidency… Obama has shown the temperament, judgment, intellect and political acumen that are essential in a president that would lead the United States out of the crises created by President Bush, a complicit Congress and our own apathy".

This is an amazing endorsement by the Salt Lake Tribune because in the 2004 election, President Bush carried Utah with close to 72% of the vote (his best showing anywhere).

As of October 21, 2008, Obama now leads John McCain 121-42 in editorial endorsements, (in 2004, John Kerry slightly edge out George W. Bush in endorsements by 213 to 205).

Including the Salt Lake Tribune, at least 26 newspapers that backed Bush in 2004 are now behind Obama.

This list includes: The Chicago Tribune, (which never back a Democratic in its 150 year existence) The Denver Post, Houston Chronicle, New York's Daily News, Chicago Sun-Times, The Canton Repository (Ohio) Kansas City Star, Naples Daily-News, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Hamilton Journal-News (Ohio) which summed up their switch best by stating:

“…The election of Obama on Nov. 4 does not guarantee that he will be able to deliver immediately on the ambitious agenda of change that he has been discussing and developing with Americans for the past 20 months. Nor will his selection solve the world's economic crisis. But electing Obama next month does declare to the entire world that a new, positive and optimistic course has been set for America, with attainable and desirable goals that will lift up the 305 million people who call this country home”.

Well said.

Election 08: Obama Meets Joe The Plumber /McCain on Letterman/Obama & McCain Stand-Up

Today we have election clips galore! First up is the full clip of Obama meeting "Joe The Plumber, followed by David Letterman blasting John McCain on the "Late Show with David Letterman " and finally we have Obama and McCain roasting each other at the Alfred E. Smith dinner.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Washington Post) "Joe the Plumber is not exactly a plumber, he's not even close to making the kind of money that would result in higher taxes from Democrat Barack Obama's proposals and has such an aversion to taxes that a lien was filed against him by the state of Ohio"

McCain/Letterman Have Spirited Exchange

Both Obama and Mccain did a pretty good job roasting each other at the Alfred E. Smith Dinner. Obama was funnier, but you could tell some of the jokes he told made him feel slightly uncomfortable.

Election 08: "Im Afraid If Barack Obama Wins. The Blacks Will Take Over"

Folks, I just want you to let you know that even though there are still elements ofprejudice and racism in my home state of Ohio, even I have been shocked by some of these clips. During a Sarah Palin rally in Ohio, Casey Kauffman talked to some Republican supporters about Senator Obama and the answers these people give are crazy and sad at the same time.

The funny thing is that Kauffman is from AlJazeera English, The world's first English language news channel to have its headquarters in the Middle East.

I wonder what would've happened if these folks knew he worked for an organization called AlJazeera? http://www.youtube.com/user/AlJazeeraEnglish

Election 08: Obama and McCain On Taxes

(Washington Post) "According to a new analysis by the Tax Policy Center, a joint project of the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain are both proposing tax plans that would result in cuts for most American families. Obama's plan gives the biggest cuts to those who make the least, while McCain would give the largest cuts to the very wealthy.

For the approximately 147,000 families that make up the top 0.1 percent of the income scale, the difference between the two plans is stark. While McCain offers a $269,364 tax cut, Obama would raise their taxes, on average, by $701,885 - a difference of nearly $1 million".

In hood terms, under Obama's plan if you don't have a lot of bank, you will get a nice tax return. However, if you are rolling with the big dogs like Oprah or Lebron, you're going to have to pay some money back to the goverment.

Under McCain's plan, if you're 50 Cent or Diddy, you will still keep a lot of your money, while those who are middle class or poor will receive very little in their tax returns.

Vibe.com Names Eminem Best Rapper Alive

Recently Vibe.com had an NCAA -like bracket on who is the "Best Rapper Alive." After the dust settled, Eminem beat Jay-Z 69% to 31%.

Although I think Slim Shady and Hov should be in the discussion of the "Best Rapper Alive," the last time I checked Rakim, Chuck D , KRS One and Big Daddy Kane are still alive. But unlike some hip hop purists, I am not an Eminem hater.

I think Marshall Mathers is one of most underrated MC's of his time. The thing that separates Em from the rest of the pack is that he is not afraid to open himself emotionally to the masses.

Its one thing to be a great wordsmith or to rhyme with grand bravado, but the ability to raise the curtain and let everyone into your life is not an easy thing to do; for the exception of 2Pac, Em is one of few rappers to do this effectively, (I think this why LL Cool J is hardly mentioned in the "Best Rapper" debates, because even though he is one greatest rappers ever, I think people knows "Ladies Love Cool James", but they still do not know James Todd Smith).
Now do I think Emeniem the best rapper alive, it's hard to say.

I like Mr. Carter (Shawn, sorry Weezy), I think Nas is another rapper who takes a lot of chances lyrically and through they might not be the best rappers alive, you cannot deny the lyrical skills of Common, Q-Tip, Pos and Dave from De la Soul , Andre 3000 (whose word play is vastly underrated) Kanye West, MC Lyte, a pre-breakdown Lauryn Hill, Black Thought from the Roots and underground rappers like MC Asheru.

But check out the brackets below and tell us not just on who is the great rapper alive, but also who should've been on and off the initial list of 64.

Election 08: Some Ohioans at McCain-Palin Rally Believes Obama is a Terrorist

This is by far one of the most disturbing videos I have seen in a long time.

Recently, John McCain and Sarah Palin held a rally in Strongsville, Ohio. A guy named Tim who runs the YouTube channel bloggerinterrupted went to the rally and asked some of the attendees a few questions, including if they thought Barack Obama is a terrorist.

To my dismay, there were several people who thought Obama was a terrorist or at least had terrorist leanings.

This video is disturbing, not just because of the pure ignorance of these of people, but the fact that these people are from Ohio. This blog is based in Akron, Ohio and to paraphrase Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks, I am embarrassed that these people are from Ohio.

For the past few presidential elections, Ohio has been seen as a red state that has voted for George Bush twice. While the middle and southern parts of Ohio are usually red, Northeast, Ohio where I live is definitely blue.

Akron is a Democratic city as is Cleveland, but you have suburban pockets of Northeast Ohio like Strongsville that at times leans Republican.

Look, if you are a Republican that's fine, but the fact there are people in not just Ohio, but across the U.S. that believes Barack Obama is a Muslim terrorist is sheer stupidity. If Barack Obama was really terrorist, wouldn't the CIA or FBI say: "hey folks, a terrorist is running for president!"
These claims that Obama is a terrorist are not new, but its has been flamed as of late by McCain and Palin who are now asking "Who is The Real Obama?" or questioning his relationship with William Ayres, a Chicago college professor who was a radical back in the 1960s.

This coded form of racism is dangerous because McCain-Palin are only doing this because they are slipping in the polls. However, once the election is over, Sarah Palin will go back shooting moose in Alaska and John McCain will live in one of his many homes and drive his fleet of cars.

However, there will be a segment out there who will still believe the government is being run by a Muslim terrorist, which could lead to more death threats for Obama or worse yet an assassination attempt.

The interesting thing is that Obama seems unfazed by the terrorist continues to reaffirms his ability to stay cool and focused during tense times, which one needs to be a successful leader.

But take a few minutes and watch the video and tell us what you think.

Election 08:'Rednecks for Obama' want to bridge yawning culture gap

SAINT LOUIS, Missouri (AFP) - When Barack Obama's campaign bus made a swing through Missouri in July, the unlikeliest of supporters were waiting for him -- or rather two of them, holding the banner: "Rednecks for Obama."

In backing the first African-American nominee of a major party for the US presidency, the pair are on a grassroots mission to bridge a cultural gap in the United States and help usher their preferred candidate into the White House.

AIG chief executive
Edward Liddy claims the retreat was
"standard practice in our industry".

(Newsday) American International Group Inc. spent $440,000 for a spa retreat for AIG executives just days after the company received a federal bailout.AIG executives had spa treatments, banquets and golf outings, according to lawmakers investigating the insurance company's meltdown.

AIG sent its executives to the coastal St. Regis resort south of Los Angeles even as the company tapped into an $85 billion loan from the government it needed to stave off bankruptcy. UK Man Shot Three Times For Wearing Barack Obama T-shirt

A man told today how he was shot three times in a London street for wearing a Barack Obama T-shirt.

Dube Egwuatu was buying a mobile telephone top-up card in an off-licence when the gunman confronted him and glared at the top, which carries an image of the Democrat US presidential candidate underneath the legend 'Believe'.

The man then launched into a tirade of racist slurs, shouting 'I f***ing hate n*****s' and urging 36-year-old Mr Egwuatu to leave the shop with him.
