Recent Flava: Consequence - Disperse (Feat. GLC & Really Doe)

I came across this video by Q-Tip's cousin Consequnce over the weekend. The track has been out since the summer, but "Disperse" is still a great track with a Hieroglyphics feel.

Kanye West who is the video (along with The Neptunes and Lupe Fiasco) is his working on the album with Q-Tip.

Uh oh! Allen Iveson vs. Practice Part Deux

Allen Iverson misses practice, won't start Friday

There was a noticeable absence at Pistons practice this morning in Auburn Hills: Allen Iverson. Iverson, who’s been a Piston for less than a month, has a history of bad behavior, including not showing up for practice.

After Wednesday night’s 110-96 victory over the Knicks, he was one of many players who grumbled when coach Michael Curry decided to hold practice on Thanksgiving morning.

Iverson was the only no-show today.

He will be fined an undisclosed amount and won’t start Friday night against the Milwaukee Bucks at the Palace. http://www.freep.com/article/20081127/SPORTS03/81127032

Houston Rockets' Tracy McGrady finds true calling in missions to ravaged Darfur

The Houston Rockets guard known as T-Mac was in a refugee camp in Chad, speaking with victims of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in neighboring Darfur. What had begun as a celebrity fact-finding mission was leaving a profound impact on McGrady, transforming the once-pampered superstar into an impassioned activist. The trip also resulted in a documentary film and collaboration with the United Nations.

More than a year later, McGrady and his partners are ready to launch the Sister School Initiative, which will work with the U.N. to fund education in refugee camps, and link African and American schools with the ambitious aim of modernizing education in war zones.

McGrady has already enlisted several NBA stars, and hopes to use his platform to bring change to this region where women are raped, children are killers and babies are set on fire, a region whose troubles changed him forever.

Will Smith Visits Cleveland

Will Smith put in a good 12-hour day in Greater Cleveland Thursday.

In the midst of a five-city tour promoting his new film, "Seven Pounds," Smith was greeted by an array of hugs, handshakes, cell-phone snappers, and "you're-really-an-inspiration" moments from starstruck fans.

"We've never done it this way before, we usually only do New York and L.A.," said Smith. "This is more like the old school music tours. Different clubs, different cities, meeting people. You get in touch with what people are feeling and thinking and it's much more personal when you're actually out shaking hands."

The actor-rapper-humanitarian carried his considerable charisma around town in a huge bus emblazoned with his face and the film's title. "Seven Pounds," a drama about a man who suffers a tragedy then helps seven strangers, opens nationwide Dec. 19th.

Will Smith promotes new movie, helping others in Cleveland

CLEVELAND: Will Smith grew up in sometimes-snowy Philadelphia but has been softened up by life in Hollywood. ''I've definitely been re-sensitized to cold,'' he said with a chuckle this morning during a chat with reporters in the InterContinental Hotel in Cleveland.

Cleveland was chosen for the tour in part because Smith has fond memories of playing there with DJ Jazzy Jeff when Smith was better known as the Fresh Prince.

GM, Ford Executives Say No To $1 Salary In Exchange For Government Aid

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The chief executives of General Motors Corp. (GM) and Ford Motor Co. (F) said Wednesday they wouldn't accept a $1 salary in exchange for government aid to their imperiled companies, as the head of the former Chrysler Corp. did a generation ago.

During a hearing Wednesday, a member of the House Financial Services Committee told Rick Wagoner of GM and Alan Mulally of Ford that reducing their annual salaries to $1 would be an important symbolic gesture as they lobby for $25 billion in loans funded by tax dollars. Chrysler's Lee Iacocca worked for that wage when his company was bailed out by the government in the 1980s.

New Flava: Kanye West - Paranoid

I'm excited about Kanye West's new album coming out.

Where the last album was definitley radio friendly, "808 & Heartbreak" should push his fans to expand their musical minds.

"Paranoid" is a great tune because it has very 80's feel about without feeling retro. The track is already getting played on BBC 1 Xtra in England, but it will be interesting to see how the album "808" will sell in America.

Although West uses auto-tunes quite a bit on "808", U.S.fans should not expect a T-pain or Lil Wayne type album, but one that musically and lyrically pushes himself and artists to grow; an evolution that most great artists make to seperate themselves from the pack.

In essence, "808" might be the album that Mr. West will finally win The Grammy for "Album of The Year". (808 & Heartbreak will be released on 11/24)

Respect The DJ- Dj Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince

The first time I heard the original 12" for "Girls", I couldn't believe what I heard. Who in the world would sample the theme of ""I Dream of Jeannie" and the second thing was who this guy rhyming named the Fresh Prince? He rhymed differently than RUN DMC or Whodini, but he was rapping the way I was thought.

After I bought DJ Jazzy Jeff's & The Fresh Prince's debut album "Rock The House", I was awed by Jazzy Jeff's scratching techniques (which influenced my Djing skills) and the use of jazz on songs like "A Touch of Jazz".

The video for "Girls" didn't come out until a few years later after Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith made "Parents Just Don't Understand."

Unfortunately, these two has not received the credit they deserve as being hip hop pioneers. Unlike a lot of rappers past and present who embellish their lives, Will & Jeff were no different from N.W.A. because they both of them were true about themselves and their surroundings.

Where Ice Cube wrote from a drug dealers perspective fRom Compton, (even though wasn't a drug dealer), Will Smith wrote about having problems with his parents; both of them were writing from a base of truth, just from two different life experiences.

Maybe that's why I'm a still a fan of Will Smith's acting and Jeff Townes's production 20 years later because both of them are still being honest to their fans, now Will is doing it on the big screen, while Jeff is still jazzy on wax.

Our campaign to bring Backspin back to Sirius is moving quite well!

Everyday we are gaining from people around the globe to help bring an old school music channel back to Sirius XM Thanks to our friend Monica, I like to extend an invitation to those fans of XM's Hip Hop channel "The Rhyme" on channel 65 to help join our fight.

As a Sirius I didn't know about "The Rhyme", but just like Backspin 43, "The Rhyme" was dedicated to pure hip hop.

So XM Rhyme listeners, please join us at Bring Backspin Back on Sirius XM. The fact that Sirius XM had two stations dedicated to pure hip hop and cancelled both of them is inexcusable; so I have an idea.

Since we have been hitting Sirius pretty hard with phone calls and emails, the next person who should hear out concerns is Mel Karmazin who is the Chief Executive Officer of SIRIUS XM Radio.

Voice your displeasure of losing Backspin 43 & The Rhyme and tell him you are going to cancel your subscription if changes aren't made to bring back an Old School Hip Hop channel, (I still miss Strobe too). Sirius stock is down to 26 cents a share and the last thing Sirius XM needs is to lose subscribers (Read: This Week's 5 Dumbest Stock Moves)

If anybody can locate an email or phone number for Mr. Karmazin, please send it to me or post it on Facebook.

Thanks

Kevin Lockett

Today I jumped in my car and I noticed that the old school Hip Hop Channel Backspin 43 was gone.

Now Sirius has about 200 stations and you mean to tell me that couldn't keep Backspin (and another favorite of mine Strobe).

Somewhere a Sirius program director missed the memo that Hip Hop is broader than 13-21 year olds. Even our soon to be elected Barack Obama is part of the old school Hip Hop generation!

He like many of us grew up on RUN DMC, LL Cool Public Enemy, De La Soul, etc.

If Sirius can keep their many classic rock and metal stations intact, why can't we have our ONE old school hip hop station?

For anyone young and old who loves hip hop, join my
Bring Backspin Back on Sirius XM group on Facebook.

If Barack Obama can change the world and get elected president, we can get together and try to bring Backspin back on Sirius XM!

Jazzy Jeff on working with Will Smith again

"Every time we get together, we talk about it," Townes said. "And I think it would be very well accepted. One of the biggest factors is that he's probably the biggest movie star on the face of the Earth. That's a big factor, because at the end of the day he's got a movie side and he's got a music side. And I don't think the movie side really likes the music side. I understand that.

If he makes a movie studio US$750-million, they probably say he's crazy for wanting to do a record. But you know what? It's in his heart."

Veterans Day 2008: Unspoken Illness Among Veterans-PTSD, Anxiety, Depression and Substance Abuse

Nearly 300,000 veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from either post-traumatic stress or depression, according to a recent study by the Rand Corp. The Department of Veterans Affairs says mental health is the second-largest area of illness for veterans of those wars.

....A few easy ways to help veterans overcome the stigma of mental illness include:

Talk about your family's experiences with mental illnesses and addictions as you would about other medical conditions. Mental illnesses and addictions need to come fully out of the closet.

Decide to become literate about mental illnesses and addictions. Read and ask questions about those conditions and look for courses on mental health literacy in your community.

Support veterans groups and your local mental health center's efforts to make mental health and addictions treatment available in every community.

Veterans Day 2008: Ohio Veterans Group to Honor Black Soldiers

The Dayton African American Legacy Institute will for the first time honor Black soldiers at an Armistice Day memorial program. The program honors local Blacks who died while serving their country, reports The Dayton Daily News.

“Each year, I see celebrations for our veterans, but I never see observances for the Black soldiers who sacrificed for us,” said Bill C. Littlejohn, Dayton Municipal Court Judge and board president of the institute.
“African-Americans fought in every war from the Revolution to the present day. The group recognizes that for decades Black soldiers returning from war were ostracized. “We want to honor their heroism and their perseverance,” Littlejohn said.

The group will hold a reception and program this evening called “African-American Veterans: A History of Service and Sacrifice.” They will present medals they received from the government posthumously to families of deceased veterans and to living veterans, Littlejohn said.

Jobless rate bolts to 14-year high of 6.5 percent

WASHINGTON – The nation's unemployment rate bolted to a 14-year high of 6.5 percent in October as another 240,000 jobs were cut, far worse than economists expected and stark proof the economy is deteriorating at an alarmingly rapid pace.

.....About 10.1 million people were unemployed in October, an increase of 2.8 million over the past year. A year ago, the unemployment rate stood at 4.8 percent.

The jobless rates for teenagers (20.6 percent) and blacks (11.1 percent) were little changed. The unemployment rate for Asians in October was 3.8 percent, not seasonally adjusted. One of the great things about the show Entourage on HBO is that that play a lot of episode. At the end of episode 62 ("First Class Jerk", they played this song "Come Get With it" by the indie hip hop act Basic Vocab. The track is in that Slum Village/KMD mode.

Election Day 2008: Barack Obama-Yes We Can

Okay people its D-Day! Call your friends, your family, co-workers, heck even people you hate and tell them to vote or take them with you to vote Obama today, (as well as the many issues and political races in your hometown)

No offense to John McCain, but dude should have handled his business back in 2000 when George W. Bush and Karl Rove was smacking him around.

Today's election is not just about the U.S., but our interanational brothers and sisters who checks out our blog everyday who are watching we are doing to see if we can turn this country and gain worldwide respect again.

I'm not saying that Barack Obama is going to fix everything (it'll probably take him at least two terms to get us back on track as a nation), but an Obama victory will strengthen our presence around the world, plus he'll be the first cool brotha in the Whitehouse!

We can't afford another four years of Bush's failed policies and leave them in the hands of man who has a bad heart and woman who believes that it was in God's plans that the U.S. invaded Iraq.

So get up off couch, get in your car, get on the bus, I don't care how you do it and vote.

If not for yourself, do it it for your children and your children's children.

If you don't know where to vote, go to: http://www.voteforchange.com/ type in your information and it will tell you where you need to go.

CALL 1-866-OUR-VOTE IF YOU HAVE VOTING PROBLEMS
